RM이 피처링곡으로 글로벌 차트를 강타했다.

7일(이하 한국시간) 세계 최대 음원 스트리밍 플랫폼 스포티파이가 발표한 최신 ‘데일리 톱 송 글로벌’(9월 6일 자)에서 방탄소년단 RM이 피처링한 미국의 래퍼 메건 더 스탤리언(Megan Thee Stallion)의 신곡 ‘Neva Play (feat. RM)’가 450만 회 이상 스트리밍되며 10위에 올랐다. 이로써 RM은 본인이 참여한 신곡으로 솔로곡 기준 자체 최고 성적을 경신했다.

‘Neva Play (feat. RM)’의 열기는 전 세계 아이튠즈 차트에서도 확인 가능하다. 지난 6일 오후 1시 발표된 이 곡은 7일까지 미국, 독일, 캐나다, 그리스 등 총 87개 국가/지역 아이튠즈 ‘톱 송’ 차트에서 1위를 찍었다. 뿐만 아니라 7일 일본 오리콘이 발표한 ‘데일리 디지털 싱글 랭킹’(9월 6일 자)에 2위로 직행하는 등 여러 글로벌 차트에서 두각을 나타냈다.

 

‘Neva Play (feat. RM)’는 중독성 강한 비트가 특징인 힙합 장르의 곡이다. 메건 더 스탤리언의 화려한 래핑에 RM의 묵직하고 카리스마 넘치는 목소리가 어우러졌다. 둘의 불꽃 튀는 액션이 애니메이션으로 표현된 뮤직비디오 또한 압권이다.

RATING

Megan의 플로우는 단연 이 곡의 하이라이트이다. 그녀는 강약 조절을 적절히 하며 구절을 밀어붙이는 듯한 전달력으로 리스너의 귀를 사로잡는다. 특히, 리듬감을 강조하는 강렬한 비트 위에 얹힌 그녀의 랩은 듣는 이를 흥분시키고 몰입하게 만든다. 이는 Cardi B의 "Up"이나 Lil Kim의 전성기 시절과 비교될 만큼 타격감이 있다.

 

"Neva Play"는 Megan의 트레이드마크인 ‘강한 여성상’을 강조하며, 이는 그녀의 다른 히트곡들 Savage, Body과도 일맥상통한다. 그러나 이번 곡에서는 좀 더 공격적이고, 자기 방어적인 주제를 다루며 그녀의 캐릭터를 더욱 선명하게 부각시킨다. 니키 미나즈 "Monster"에서 느낄 수 있는 비슷한 파워풀한 에너지가 "Neva Play"에서도 나타난다.

 

 비트는 무겁고 강렬하며, 트랩 요소를 기반으로 하고 있지만 전형적인 트랩 곡의 패턴을 따르지 않고 독창적으로 전개된다. 또한 베이스라인과 타악기가 곡의 중심을 잡아주며, 전반적으로 공간감을 잘 활용한 믹싱이 돋보인다. Metro Boomin이나 Mike WiLL Made-It이 제작한 트랙과 유사한 느낌을 주지만, 그 속에서 Megan의 스타일이 빛을 발하는 차별화가 존재한다.

 

다만, 가사적인 측면에서 "Neva Play"는 Megan의 기존 곡들과 크게 다르지 않다는 점이 아쉬울 수 있다. 자기 과시와 성공, 경쟁자에 대한 경고 등의 주제가 중심을 이루고 있는데, 이는 그녀의 다른 트랙들에서도 자주 등장하는 주제들이다. 리릭에서 좀 더 새로운 이야기를 시도했더라면 곡의 신선함이 배가되었을 것이다.

 

Megan은 여전히 그녀만의 독특한 목소리와 에너지를 갖고 있지만, 이 곡은 그녀의 음악적 스펙트럼을 넓히는 데 있어 한계를 보여준다. 곡 자체는 탄탄하지만, 실험적인 요소가 부족하여 트렌드를 따르는 듯한 느낌을 줄 수도 있다. 예를 들어, Doja Cat이 *Planet Her*에서 보여준 장르의 혼합과 다양한 사운드 실험을 고려하면, Megan의 음악은 여전히 더 과감한 시도가 필요할 수 있다.

 

곡은 에너제틱하고 파워풀하지만, 감정적인 깊이나 서사적인 접근이 부족하다는 지적도 가능하다. 청자는 트랙의 기술적 완성도에 놀라지만, 감정적으로 깊게 연결되기는 어렵다. 이는 Megan의 곡들이 대체로 타격감에 중점을 두는 스타일에서 오는 문제일 수 있지만, 때로는 곡의 감정적 파고가 약하게 느껴질 수 있다.

 

피처링으로 들어간 rm은 내가 가진 k-POP에 대한 인식을 바꿔주었다.

방탄소년단의 노래를 부를 때보다 rm의 목소리가 더 딥하고 무거웠다.

랩핑 자체가 엄청나게 대단했다기 보단 rm만이 가지고 있는 분위기를 잘 보여준 것 같았다. 목소리를 이대로 유지해도 좋을 것 같다.
